“Awely”

200 x 122cms

Ref No: MM1050MP

The bold linear pattern of stripes and curves throughout Minnie’s painting illustrates women’s ceremonial body paint design. After smearing their bodies with animal fat, the women trace these designs onto their breasts, arms and thighs, while singing as each woman takes her turn to be ‘painted-up’. Their songs relate to the Dreaming stories of ancestral travel and other totemic plants, animals and natural forces. ‘Awely’ (women’s ceremony) demonstrates respect for the land. In performing these ceremonies they ensure wellbeing and happiness within their communities.

Minnie was born on Alyawarr country, approximately 200 kilometres to the northeast of Alice Springs, circa 1920. Minnie had 7 children including Barbara Weir, Eileen, Betty, Dora Mbitjana and Raymond. Two daughters passed away several years ago.Minnie passed away in March 2006.
